What Is a Psychological Evaluation for Immigration Cases?

A psychological evaluation is a clinical report written by a licensed mental health professional. It documents the emotional, psychological and functional status of the individual being evaluated.

What are our psychological evaluations like?

Our psychological evaluations are conducted in two separate sessions, consisting of about 60-90 minutes each. These sessions are conducted via our secure platform, Simple Practice, through a video call.

The evaluations include a thorough analysis of the psychological, emotional, and mental health of the individual using a trauma-informed approach to allow the client to feel as safe as possible during the interview.  We conduct a one-on-one interview, a mental status exam, and administer “psychometric tests” or scales when appropriate. Cultural humility is an essential part of these evaluations, referencing the unique experiences and backgrounds of each of our clients.

The information collected is used to create a detailed report that refers to the client’s history, test scores, mental status, symptoms, challenges, and diagnosis, if any.

Our highly qualified clinicians have specialized training and experience in assessments and evidence-based interventions. We use the Professional Guidelines for Psychological Evaluations in Immigration Proceedings published by the Journal of Latinx Psychology.  All of our clinicians are proficient in both English and Spanish, ensuring effective communication to support our clients.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

A psychological assessment is not therapy. It is a professional clinical evaluation that assesses the individual’s mental status and their symptoms.

Be honest and open.

There are no “right” or “wrong” answers.

It is common for people to feel nervous when completing a psychological evaluation, and that’s okay. Our trauma-informed clinicians are sensitive and have been trained to interview individuals who have experienced severe emotional injury.
