How to Navigate Change and Protect Your Mental Health
Life transitions are transformative periods in our lives that involve a change in our lifestyle or the beginning of something new. It can be experienced positively when we plan events, like going to college or getting married. Other life transitions can be unexpected like developing an illness, or when an expected event may not occur the way you hoped for like that job promotion you’ve worked hard to earn.
Yet, when events occur in our lives without warning or manifest in subtle microaggressions, they become challenging to deal with. Facing what we may not have control of can make us feel vulnerable. A sense of lack of control or loss, can make us question where we fit, and who we are, and lead to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and even fear of the uncertainty of what lies ahead. This can result in acute stress or lead to mental health conditions, including:
An unhealthy and excessive emotional or behavioral response to a stressful event or changes within months of it happening.
Long-lasting feelings of sadness or lack of interest that negatively impact daily life activities.
Living in a constant state of worry, anxiety, and/or fear about everyday issues and situations lasting longer than six months and creates difficulties in the quality of life.
sound familiar?
- Relocation: Moving to a new city or country for work, education, or personal reasons can result in a loss as you leave behind familiar places, people, memories, and established routines.
- Career transitions and Advancement: Changing jobs, switching careers, or advancing within a current career path can result in fear or worry about the unknown and contribute to stress.
- Acculturation: Experiencing shifts in cultural identity, such as immigrating to a new country, and adapting to a new cultural environment can result in uncertainty and stress.
- Relational Transitions: Getting married, divorced, entering or ending a long-term relationship, becoming a parent, or experiencing the loss of a loved one can create individual challenges while adjusting to all that it entails.
- Personal development: Undertaking personal growth initiatives, such as pursuing further education, or working on self-improvement can be an exciting endeavor for some, but for others, it can result in anxiety, and a sense of inadequacy.
These changes suggest a need for support in adjusting to what you’ve been experiencing.
